A stress test is often referred to as a treadmill test or exercise test. Stress tests allow physicians to study the heart and its function. Heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), and fatigue level are monitored during the test. During the test, the body works in response to the exercise, requiring more oxygen, and in turn increasing the heart activity to pump blood. From the tests, physicians can determine if blood supply is reduced in the arteries that supply the heart, aiding in diagnosis and treatment.
